Cavities are the result of acid production by bacteria found in plaque. As the acids demineralizes the tooth, it allows bacteria to penetrate deeper until a cavity forms. Depending on how early these cavities are detected, this progression can be stopped without the need of a dental drill. However, more often than not, fillings are required because the cavities have become too large to stop on their own with only good oral hygiene.
When it comes time for a filling, we need to remove all parts of the tooth that are infected with bacteria. Once the tooth is clean, the cavity can be filled with a variety of dental materials. Unfortunately nothing in dentistry last forever, so regular dental check ups are essential to help keep your fillings in top condition.
